A Note From Debra
Founder, President, and Brand Visionary.

We opened the doors in 2005. At the start, there were just a few of us and we were a tiny boutique. We made all our products in very small batches, put the labels on, and tied all the bows ourselves. We only had one or two estheticians working on a daily basis. It takes a lot of time and effort to start a boutique and to launch a product line. Things start very slow.

I loved what we were doing so much, and wondered if people would love what we were doing too.

It took me at least three years of planning to fully develop the idea of Frilly Lilly. I would create vision boards, read design books, go to antique shops, work with chemists, and a long list of other things. Some small details changed over the years, but I always wanted to create a beauty boutique. I wanted to have our own signature bath and body care products too. In this way, I knew I would love every part of Frilly Lilly.

I was fortunate to have the help from my children and friends: Lisa, Jeremy, Claudia, and Carly all helped our very first boutique grow, and flourish. I’m so grateful for their contributions to our development, some of which continue today.

Shortly after we opened, I was in Las Vegas for a business trip. I don’t know what motivated me to do it, but I decided I wanted to show our products to a few businesses. After putting so much effort into developing our products, I think I was hoping for some feedback.

The first place I visited was the Palms Hotel, and they decided to place an order on the spot! We had never planned on selling our products to businesses other than Frilly Lilly boutiques, it caught us off-guard. W were completely unprepared for such immediate appreciation and demand. The next two places I visited were the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas and Fred Segal in Los Angeles. They both placed orders. We were all so shocked, and excited. Not to mention it was extremely encouraging receiving such unbridled support from trendsetting businesses so early on.

Within a few years, our first boutique was successful, and we had other businesses carrying Frilly Lilly products. At that point, I felt prepared to open more Frilly Lilly boutiques. I was passionate about the idea of being able to expand our female-founded company, as well as providing other women with the opportunity for leadership and entrepreneurship. I wanted to give women the tools they needed to be empowered and successful.

Our next boutiques opened in 2009 in Calgary’s McKenzie Towne, and in Victoria (BC). Shortly after, we opened our Aspen, and Crowfoot Corner boutiques in Calgary, and our boutique in Vancouver’s trendy Yaletown. We garnered more and more acclaim for our space, products, and services. All the while, strong female candidates presented themselves in the running to open their own Frilly Lilly boutiques in their own neighbourhoods, and cities.

There are still times when I’m shocked that we have more than one boutique. I’m so proud of everything we have accomplished. It’s hard for me to believe that not long ago, there was only a handful of us doing the best we could to bring a dream to life. The community we’ve created is better than I could have dreamed, and I am so excited to see where we grow next!
